Alpine Trails & Day Trips

Walking Routes, Viewpoints & Nearby Nature

From the gentle 6 km lake perimeter to rugged Julian Alps gorges and wilder glacial valleys.

While Lake Bled's shoreline promenade is remarkably accessible and scenic, the real charm of Upper Carniola opens when you step onto the network of trails threading through the surrounding limestone ridges and into Triglav National Park. Staying at a hotel with easy trail access allows you to begin your hikes at dawn before heat and tour groups gather.

1. The Lake Bled Perimeter Circuit (6.0 km)

A completely graded, mostly pedestrianized trail circumnavigates the entire shoreline. The circuit requires approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of gentle walking at an unhurried pace.

2. The Classic Panoramic Viewpoints: Ojstrica & Mala Osojnica

If you have ever seen an iconic photograph of Lake Bled taken from an elevated perch with an isolated rustic bench in the foreground, it was captured from Ojstrica (611 m) or Mala Osojnica (685 m).

The Trailhead: Located at the western end of the lake, just behind the Velika Zaka campsite road. The path begins with an unassuming forest track before pitching sharply upward through beech roots and limestone scree.

Ojstrica Trail Profile

  • Short but steep: 20 to 25 minutes of continuous ascending.
  • A single rocky scramble section near the summit with a steel cable handrail.
  • Yields the iconic wooden bench view directly overlooking the island.
  • Unbeatable sunrise location.

Mala Osojnica Trail Profile

  • More strenuous: 45 minutes of ascent from lake level.
  • Features a steep, enclosed metal staircase with over 80 steps bolted into the rock.
  • Higher elevation affords a wider panorama including the Karawanks and Stol peak.
  • Can become slippery after autumn rain.

Hiking Safety & Gear

While these viewpoints are short walks, they are true alpine woodland paths. Do not attempt Ojstrica or Osojnica in smooth-soled city shoes, flip-flops, or immediately following heavy rain. Sturdy trail runners or lightweight hiking shoes with lugged soles are strongly advised.

3. Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar)

Located just 4 kilometres north of Lake Bled near the village of Podhom, Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6-kilometre ravine carved by the rushing Radovna River. First opened to the public in 1893, wooden walkways and galleries (Žumer Galleries) cling directly to vertical limestone walls above emerald rapids, whirlpools, and cascades, culminating in the 13-metre Šum waterfall.

Visiting Logistics: Entry requires timed tickets, especially during peak months, to preserve trail safety and flow. From Lake Bled hotels, you can reach Vintgar via seasonal shuttle buses, electric rental bicycles, or a scenic 45-minute country walk through the village of Zasip.

4. Day Excursions into Triglav National Park: Lake Bohinj & Pokljuka

Lake Bled serves as the natural gateway to Triglav National Park, Slovenia's sole national park:

Choosing Lodging Based on Outdoor Ambitions

If your primary intention is hiking and active photography, hotels in Velika Zaka or near Bled Jezero eliminate the need for morning driving to trailheads. If you intend to take public buses to Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj daily, basing yourself near the central Bled bus station on the eastern shore provides seamless car-free mobility throughout the Upper Carniola region.
